In February 2023, SANCTUAIRE debuted the Plage Noire Collection in recognition and tribute to African-American beachfront communities across the United States.  These communities were founded as places of refuge and retreat during segregation and the Jim Crow era when Black people were forbidden from many resorts, pools and beaches.  In order to facilitate leisure and sanctuary, beach communities in places like Oak Bluffs, MA, and Sag Harbor, NY, were created.  Black families would enjoy relaxation without harassment and would return year after year for joyful communion. Through this home and fine fragrance collection, we hope to capture the essence of these beach communities - the Joy, Resistance, Peace, Resilience, and Rest that are so vital to America’s past and present stories.
