What is Sea Moss?

EB:

Sea moss is a type of red algae typically known by several different botanical names; Eucheuma Cottonii, Gracilaria and Chondrus Crispus. They are all referred to as ‘sea moss’ but they are very different from each other. The species Gracilaria (used in the Ocean’s Promise Premium Sea Moss Gel) grows abundantly in warmer waters (i.e. the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans). These waters are normally constantly flowing, open ocean currents, and they tend to be much clearer waters too. While Chondrus Crispus is a rarer species by comparison, it tends to grow more slowly in the cooler waters of the Northern Atlantic.

S:

What is the history of Sea Moss?

EB:

Chondrus Crispus is also known by many as Irish Sea Moss, or Irish Carraigín. This is because the Irish consumed a lot of it in the 1840’s during the Irish Potato Famine. It became a primary source of sustenance for the Irish people who lived in coastal areas between 1845 and 1849 during the height of the famine. As a result, it is believed that it was later looked upon as ‘peasant food‘ when harder times had passed. It was reported that by the end of the famine it had fallen from grace and was not consumed as frequently. According to the history books, people would wait until the tide went out and collect the red flat leafed seaweed. They would then lay the seaweed on the rocks to sun-dry. Some made the seaweed into delicacies, more commonly it was added to stews. This is not unusual even by today’s standards. In Vietnam people make desserts with different types of seaweed. They are also used widely for medicinal purposes.

How did you become interested in Sea Moss and what led to the creation of Ocean’s Promise ?

EB:

My family is from St. Lucia and sea moss has been popular in the Caribbean for many years. When a relative approached me with the idea of creating a sea moss brand, given my background in branding and marketing, I was initially reluctant— my personal experience with sea moss had been anecdotal at best. Ironically, I was experiencing some health issues at the time and started incorporating sea moss into my morning smoothies. Simply put, it helped tremendously! After experiencing its benefits for myself, I decided to dive in head first and Ocean’s Promise was born. I committed to learning everything I could about sea moss, ranging from naturopathic resources to the core of my Caribbean roots. My mission is to deliver a premium brand that instills confidence in our customers, and empowers them on their journey towards optimal wellness.

Describe the taste of Sea Moss Gel.

EB:

Pure sea moss gel (with no infusion) has more of an ocean-like “essence” than a taste. Imagine standing on a beach and taking in the ocean air, or if a cucumber came from the sea -- something like that. Each of the different infusions (i.e. bladderwrack & burdock root) will come with their own subtle taste, but all are hardly noticeable in smoothies or flavored beverages.

S:

Besides smoothies, are their other ways to incorporate sea moss into a wellness routine?

EB:

Sea moss gel may also be used topically, on the face or affected skin area(s), and also as a restorative hair gel.

S:

What are the additional benefits of the Bladderwrack & Burdock Root infusion that we carry on SANCTUAIRE?

EB:

Bladderwrack has been a fundamental component of herbal medicine, long before recorded time. Scientifically known as Fucus Vesiculosus, it is commonly referred to as Rockweed, Red Fucus or Black Tang. It is a rich source of beta-carotene, potassium and many other organic compounds that make it a true superfood. Bladderwrack slows macular degeneration and is a natural way to improve vision. It also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, useful in treating arthritis. It promotes healthy digestion and is ideal for weight loss, as it increases metabolism. Bladderwrack also reduces risks associated with coronary disease and slows signs of aging. It contains Fucoidan, a unique fiber that regulates cell growth. This is a valuable component of cancer prevention, as it also contains anti-tumor properties. It promotes a healthy brain, thyroid, bones, lungs, energy levels, immune response and mood. Burdock Root is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. It purifies the blood, kills germs, reduces fever, and is used as a diuretic to increase urine flow. It is also used to treat cancer, colds, Gastrointestinal issues, joint pain, arthritis, syphilis, bladder infections, catarrh and gout. Burdock Root is frequently used as an aphrodisiac and a topical treatment for various skin conditions, including eczema, acne and psoriasis.

S:

How long does it typically take to experience results and how often should it be used?

EB:

Individual results can vary, depending on a wide range of personal health factors, genetics, etc. However, many of our customers experience positive results within the first few days of use. We recommend daily use for best results.

S:

Why is incorporating sea moss into a wellness routine particularly important for people of color, and women of color?

EB:

As we know, many people of color suffer from various genetic deficiencies, many of which are compounded by dietary habits. Sea moss is believed to contain 92 of the 102 essential minerals for the human body, which is especially impactful among those who may lack these vital nutrients. It is also great for the thyroid, with the ability to help balance thyroid hormones and reduce inflammation in the body, including inflamed joints.

S:

What can we expect to see in the future from Ocean’s Promise?

EB:

Our “Sea Moss Max” vegetable capsules will deliver all 102 essential minerals with a blend of organic sea moss, bladderwrack and burdock root. We are also forming more strategic partnerships with influencers and other brands within the wellness community to broaden our reach and collective impact.
